The tools of the trade
The bobbin lace is a very precious handmade threadwork. The word “tombolo” indicates both the lace itself and the instrument with which it is made: a cylindrical pillow stuffed with straw. The design of the embroidery is attached to the cushion with pins, which – with skill and patience – takes shape intertwining the spindles, small wooden sticks around which the threads are tied (traditionally of linen or cotton). It is a versatile art, a craft technique that belongs to a simple world, but which can become very complex in the most elaborate designs, in which are used more than 100 bobbins.
